Etude comparative des caractéristiques écophysiologiques et des performances de croissance de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas diploïde et triploïde en milieu contrôlé ArchiMer
Haure, Joel; Fortin, Adeline; Dupuy, Beatrice; Nourry, Max; Palvadeau, Hubert; Papin, Mathias; Penisson, Christian; Martin, Jean-louis.
Introduction: Marine farming in France is currently very widely dominated by oyster farming. French oyster production totals 148,467 tons, for a turnover of close to 280 million euros, making France the leading European producer. The two main species concerned are the cup oyster, Crassostrea gigas (140,000 tons) and the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis (2,000 tons), the production of which has collapsed since 1970 following successive epizootics of Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. French oyster farming is thus in a situation of quasi single-crop farming, with more than 90% of tonnage pertaining to the cup oyster (FAO data from 1993). This situation of quasi single-crop farming leads to the pessimistic observation that one hypothetical crisis in the...

La reproduction des mollusques bivalves en écloserie ArchiMer
Devauchelle, Nicole.
Optimal gametogenesis and egg-laying environment, fertility, number of egg-layings, reproductor ageing, relationship between parent characteristics and conditioning and farming success, are the main issues considered by bivalve hatcheries each time the reproduction of a species is taken care of. Even if there is still very little bibliographic data on this precise field, reproduction mechanisms have been studied for decades in Mytilidae and Ostreidae. Largely cultivated in open sea, they are indeed an experimental material of choice. In this paper, we will see how the acquired knowledge and the methods developed on this material can be used to carry out a study on bivalve reproduction in hatcheries.

Molecular identification, phylogeny and geographic distribution of Brazilian mangrove oysters (Crassostrea) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Melo,Aline Grasielle Costa de; Varela,Eduardo Sousa; Beasley,Colin Robert; Schneider,Horacio; Sampaio,Iracilda; Gaffney,Patrick Michael; Reece,Kimberly S.; Tagliaro,Claudia Helena.
Oysters (Ostreidae) manifest a high degree of phenotypic plasticity, whereby morphology is of limited value for species identification and taxonomy. By using molecular data, the aim was to genetically characterize the species of Crassostrea occurring along the Brazilian coast, and phylogenetically relate these to other Crassostrea from different parts of the world. Sequencing of the partial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I gene (COI), revealed a total of three species of Crassostrea at 16 locations along the Brazilian coast. C. gasar was found from Curuçá (Pará state) to Santos (São Paulo state), and C. rhizophorae from Fortim (Ceará state) to Florianópolis (Santa Catarina state), although small individuals of the latter species were also found at Ajuruteua...

Reproduction de l'huître creuse dans le bassin d'Arcachon, Année 2006 ArchiMer
Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele; Cassam Chenai, Yoann; Tournaire, Marie-pierre; Neaud-masson, Nadine; Rumebe, Myriam; Cantin, Christian; Debort, Henriette; Germain, Jean-marie; Navarro, Romuald.
Introduction: During each summer season, the IFREMER laboratory of Arcachon monitors, within the framework of the agreement with the Arcachon- Aquitaine Shellfish Farming Regional Section (SRC), the reproduction of cup oysters in the Arcachon basin. This monitoring has as its goal to furnish oyster farmers with the information needed to implement spat catches: - dates and size of egg clutches, - larvae development rate, - presence in the environment of more evolved stages (close to fixation). Reproduction was monitored between mid-June and mid-September, plankton was fished four times per week at the various sites representative of the basin. Oyster larvae at various stages are enumerated there. At the end of the reproductive season (September to...

Toward reference intervals for shellfish: An illustrative case of feeding and respiratory activities in the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
François, Cyrille; Haure, Joel; Billy, Jean-christophe; Renault, Tristan.
Background The Quality Assurance and Laboratory Standards Committee of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology and the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute provide a framework for establishing reference intervals of physiological parameters in reputedly healthy individuals, humans, and terrestrial animals, respectively. This framework was applied for the first time to the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Reference intervals (RIs) would, first, be of interest for research purposes, including pathophysiology studies. RI determination is the first step before considering the use of RIs for field applications by farmers and marine shellfish health services. Objectives The purpose of this study was to propose...
